WikiTree is a great place to build your tree. But to find actual documents, the best free site is Another site I love is, which is a collection of genealogy websites sorted by categories, like location, state, county, etc. Along those lines, is another excellent source of free genealogy websites. There is a completely free genealogy toolbar you can download that sits on your browser and has links to hundreds of websites mostly all free, but a few 'for pay' sites, for folks who want quick access to their subscriptions as well. Will download the toolbar for free. Sep 23, 2013 by G2G6 Mach 4 ( 40.3k points)selected Sep 23, 2013.
The toolbar isn't actually the problem, and despite what WOT says, it IS safe for children, unless you don't want them doing genealogy research on the Internet. The toolbar's download platform changed hands about a year ago, and the new company that hosts it did add some crap to the download process. But when I complained they removed those 'options'. Still, as with ANY download, folks need to watch each screen that they are agreeing to, and SKIP anything that isn't exactly what they were asking for.
So as always, users need to actually pay attention and read the instructions, and they'll end up with a really useful, completely free toolbar for genealogy research. I know cuz I created it, but unfortunately am stuck with this host for the download. It wasn't built with adware or lots of add-in crap, but designed and created initially by a genealogist with pure intentions only of sharing great websites. I had no idea a WikiTreer wrote that toolbar! That's fantastic. (Wish I could do coding like that.) I hope I made it clear I was just repeating what WOT said about it, and that it 'inherits' its reputation.
I personally have no experience with anything except WOT, which I like. WOT brought up the warning about tracking and malware when I tried to go to the toolbar, and I thought I should say so. There was absolutely nothing about children in anything I read. And thank you for the warning about reading thoroughly anything you download. So true, (and even then. Sometimes the unethical will sneak things in).It is also true that websites can get a bad rap on WOT just for something like unwanted 'options,' which are not clearly described in the instructions and so forth. They don't have a category for 'gave me something I didn't want.'
